Got an oval face shape? These are the haircuts for you, according to an expert

'90s icons are your inspo

Editor / May 21 2025

Congratulations are in order if you've come in search of a haircut that will flatter your oval face. Why? Because just about any one will. Lucky you. As Founder of Sydney's stunning hair salon, Salon HER, Michael Kelly explains, "oval face shapes are incredibly versatile".

"They carry almost any haircut effortlessly because of their natural balance and symmetry", says Kelly. "I often recommend curtain bangs, soft bobs or lived-in layers. Not because they are trending, but because they move with the face and let the natural shape shine."

Aside from the win that comes with being a prime candidate for curtain bangs, take immense pride in knowing your face shape is a hairdresser favourite overall. "I love working with oval faces because they let us get creative without needing to correct anything", Kelly confirms. "We are simply elevating what is already harmonious". So as we said earlier, congrats.

But because we know you actually arrived here to glean some guidance from this page, we still quizzed Kelly on the specific shapes and styles he'd suggest for oval face shapes. Your face may suit just about everything, but some haircuts will still be more flattering than others...

Haircut Inspiration For Oval Face Shapes

Cameron Diaz's Textured Bob

You'll want to look to certain '90s icons for the ultimate inspo. Think short chin-grazing cuts packed with plenty of texture.

"Cameron Diaz in the early '90s is one of my favourite references for oval face shape perfection", says Kelly. "Her short textured cuts and tousled mid-length bobs showed how effortless shape and movement can be when the bone structure is doing half the work. Nothing felt overdone and it gave that cool, undone energy we still lean into today."

Julia Roberts' Voluminous Layers

If you prefer a longer look, layers are your biggest ally.

"Julia Roberts is another standout", Kelly shares. "Her iconic long layers with soft volume framed the face in the most flattering way. I always come back to that look when clients want length that still feels structured. She wore volume without losing softness which is ideal for oval shapes."

Zendaya's Versatile Options

Zendaya is a perfect example of a woman with an oval face who takes full advantage of the flexibility her face shape grants her.

"From structured bobs to flowing waves and curtain fringes, she shows how much range this face shape can hold", Kelly notes. We must admit, however, we're especially partial to her mid-length lob with a side fringe cut in.

Emma Watson's Sharp Crop

An oval face shape gives you the ultimate blessing: to know a crop cut will suit you.

"Emma Watson leans into her features with sharp crops and refined bobs", Kelly confirms. "Her cuts are clean and intentional but still soft around the face which is the sweet spot for oval balance."

"All of these examples show how oval face shapes can move through different eras and styles while always staying in proportion", Kelly explains. "That is the power of harmony. When the face gives us that much to work with, it is about letting the haircut speak with ease not excess."
