Land yourself a Pedro Pascal with this Dakota Johnson 'Materialists' hair tutorial

The happy ending we all deserve
We all know that Dakota Johnson's hair is her crowning glory, but it appears her recent stint as Lucy in Celine Song's thoughtful romance Materialists, has caused a surge in TikTok searches for 'Dakota Johnson hair tutorial' by 157 per cent — a mere week after the film's release.
Dakota Johnson's look taps into the rising demand for glossy, flyaway-free hair with a natural bend, Daniel Jiang Liu — Shark Beauty ambassador, and founder of Sydney’s genderless hair salon, Usfin Atelier — tells BEAUTYcrew.
In fact, the hair expert has studied Johnson's signature Birkin Bangs and tousled style in the film, so we don't have to, and simplified the whole process for those of us who're trying to attract a Pedro Pascal type, with just a flip of our hair. All you need to do is keep reading to secure your happy ending...
1/ Prep your hair for heat styling
Your hair style is only as good as your hair prep, which is why it's so important to start with damp, towel-dried hair, says Jiang Liu.
"This helps reduce frizz and gives more control when styling the fringe," he tells BEAUTYcrew.
And don't forget a heat protectant!
Dakota Johnson's hairstylist Mark Townsend frequently uses Kevin Murphy products and volumising mousse on the actress prior to blowdrying.
So kill two birds with one stone and use your fingers to comb a palmful of Kevin Murphy's Heated Defense ($46.95 from Adore Beauty) through your hair, concentrating the product through the mid-lengths and ends.

2/ It's time to master a smooth blow out
"Using the Shark FlexStyle (usually $399.99, now on sale for $299.99 from Shark Beauty) with the oval brush attachment and concentrator nozzle, smooth the hair section by section, directing airflow downwards for a sleek finish," Jiang Liu instructs.

3/ Round brush your fringe to imitate Johnson's signature Jane Birkin bangs
"Focus on the fringe using a medium-sized round brush," says Jiang Liu. We recommend the lightweight and inexpensive ELEVEN Australia Medium Round Brush ($29.95 from Adore Beauty) for the job.
"Blow-dry it forward and slightly under," he explains. "Using the nozzle to guide the shape without over-bending the hair."

4/ Smooth flyaways for that silver screen high-shine finish
Now that your fringe is perfectly coiffed, it's time to turn your attention to your lengths, says Jiang Liu.
"Switch to the Shark SpeedStyle with RapidGloss Finisher (usually $249.99, now on sale for $199.99 from Shark Beauty) to glide over lengths and ends, sealing in shine and smoothing flyaways for a signature high-shine finish," the Usfin Atelier founder tells us.

5/ Add texture to your strands with Dakota Johnson's hair styling holy trinity
Dakota Johnson's hairstylist Mark Townsend loves hair that looks touchable and actually moves, however Johnson's hair presents a challenge, because the actress actually hates having dirty hair.
"My challenge is always to make it look not-so-clean," Townsend told Vogue. "I want it to look like it’s the second day post-wash."
To achieve this he uses Kevin Murphy's Doo.Over Spray ($49.95 from Adore Beauty): "It's my absolute favourite product — it’s a powder-based hairspray — that’s all we ever really put in her bangs."
"Then I use the Kevin Murphy Hair.Resort Spray ($46.95 from Adore Beauty) from the mid-lengths down to give it a little piecey-ness," he explained.
At the end, Townsend applies a little salt spray to his hands and scrunches it through Johnson's hair — his favourite is R+Co's Rockaway Salt Spray (usually $48, now on sale for $38.40 from Adore Beauty).
"Since salt sprays are usually wet, I don’t want to re-wet the finished style," he explained to W Magazine. "So when I spray it onto my hands first then I am only adding the texturising salt."

Dakota Johnson's not the only celebrity with a trending hair style we've been trying to copy lately. We've been attempting to recreate Bella Hadid's signature slick bun too, and mastering it is simpler than you might think.

Briar Clark got her start in the media industry in 2017, as an intern for Marie Claire and InStyle. Since then, her keen interest in fashion and beauty has landed her gigs as a Digital Content Producer and Beauty Editor with titles like Girlfriend, Refinery29, BEAUTYcrew and beautyheaven. She loves the way seemingly innocuous topics like skin care and style have the ability to put a smile on people’s faces or make them think about themselves a little differently. A big believer in self love and experimentation, Briar has made a point of becoming the Australian beauty industry’s unofficial guinea pig for unusual treatments and daring hair trends. When she’s not testing out the latest beauty launches, Briar is big on broadening her horizons, mostly in the form of food but she’s also partial to travelling to new destinations both near and far (and of course, allocating an extra bag to bring their best beauty offerings home with her).
