Just like everybody else with a Netflix subscription and an America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders obsession, we've spent the far too much time learning all about the lore and history of the star spangled NFL cheer team.

If you've ventured down the rabbit hole of Reddit Threads, and binged Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making The Team like we have, then you've probably noticed that almost all of the DDC have one thing in common — their hair is big. And considering these ladies represent the largest American Football conglomerate in 'everything's bigger in' Texas, the signature DCC hairstyle doesn't come as a surprise.

But according to second year veteran, Ava Lahey, 'big' hair isn't actually a requirement if you want to make the team.

Do Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Have To Curl Their Hair?

"When I made it to training camp for the first time, I tried curling my hair, but it never really held. It would just fall flat after 20 minutes and look really stringy," she explained via Instagram. "My hair is naturally really soft and fine, [so] during rookie makeovers, they told me to try wearing it straight, and I'll never forget it. When I went back to rehearsal, one of the comments was, 'it dances better'."

"I did end up getting cut from training camp that year, but when I made it back to training camp again, I wore it straight right off the bat. Now fast forward to makeovers again, they said they loved it straight, sleek and blonde, and I was so happy," she continued. "It just feels so me, and now, it's my signature look."

"It's all about looking your best and standing out while still fitting the DCC image — wearing my hair straight is what makes me feel and look my best," Lahey shared.

As for her team mates who live by 'the bigger the hair, the closer to God' rule? Well, according to Shark Beauty Ambassador and Founder of Willomina Hair SalonChris Hunter, it's not that hard to emulate their signature, big, bouncy blowout — so long as you have the right tools on hand.

How to get the iconic Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders blowout

1/ Build volume at the roots

"Start with damp hair and use the Shark Beauty Black Sparkle FlexStyle (usually $499.99, now on sale for $399.99 from Shark Beauty) curl-defining diffuser to build volume at the roots — flip the head upside down for extra lift," Hunter tells BEAUTYcrew. "The Black Sparkle FlexStyle makes achieving this stadium-glam look fast, lightweight and damage-free  with a crystallised finish that feels just as performance-ready as the style itself."

2/ Curl away from the face

"Section the hair and use the auto-wrap curlers (barrel side) to curl large sections away from the face," he explains. "Hold each curl in place for a few seconds, then release gently."

While your curls are still warm, clip them up to set and cool for lasting hold, he instructs. We rate inexpensive curl pins like Kitsch's Rose Gold Styling Clips ($14 from MECCA) for the job.

3/ Brush through the curls to create bounce

Then, once they're fully cooled, brush through your curls softly with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb like La Bonne Brosse's The Detangling Comb 50 ($69 from MECCA) to create bounce and movement.

4/ Smooth flyaways

"Use the [Shark Beauty] styling concentrator [attachment] to smooth flyaways and shape face-framing layers," says Hunter.

5/ Add body with a bit of hairography

You can also slightly tease the crown for that extra bit of height, and then finish with a strong-hold hairspray like Moroccanoil's Luminous Hair Spray Strong Finish ($45.50 from Oz Hair & Beauty). And this is optional, but you can always add a head shake, whip, or hair flip  "it’s called hairography for a reason," Hunter jokes.
