The Sofia Richie Grainge bob is going to be the biggest hair trend of the year
Sofia Richie Grainge is our go-to gal for simple, but classic hair styles that even lazy girls can master.
Her sleek bun tutorial plays on a never ending loop in our minds, and her Biscoff bronde hair colour is a constant source of inspiration for us and our hair dressers.
But even trend setters can be influenced by hair trends, which is exactly what Grainge's TikTok followers found out when they got a front row seat to the beginning of the 27 year old's bob era .
"I have been thinking long and hard about this," Grainge explained in the five minute vlog she shared over the weekend. "I did one too many keratin treatments on my hair, and over the past six months, I've just been cutting at it and cutting at it hoping that I could get this dead away, and it's just not going away. And I know what I have to do to make this hair healthy again, and it's to start over, so we're cutting a bob."
"The bob is something new. It's gonna be super healthy, new and fresh, [and it's] good for 27," she said. "It's great for 27."
And we couldn't agree more. Not only is a bob a practical choice for chopping off dead ends, and minimising the opportunity for the potential hair pulling that comes with being the mum to a one year old — the bob is one of the most pervasive hair trends of the year.
From Leslie Bibb's blunt bob in The White Lotus, to Gracie Abrams' Autumn-approved micro bob, and winter's contoured bob trend, the last six months have produced a steady stream of shoulder-grazing hair cuts.
However, we have a sneaking suspicion that Grainge's take on the hair trend is going to leave all other bobs in the dust — and not just because Elliot Grainge's response to his wife's new hair cut was: "My God, Sofia. Wow. That looks unbelievable". Men, take notes.
Remember, this is the same Sofia Richie Grainge who spawned an army of sleek bun appreciators, simply because she was too lazy to style her hair properly.
Plus, according to Grainge, the last time she had a bob was when she was in her teens and she didn't style it at all. So, in keeping with Grainge's signature lazy girl vibe, her bob looks chic, but it's also insanely easy to style, according to her hairstylist George Curran.
What inspired her to get a bob in the first place?
The whole reason Grainge chopped her hair off was to finally get rid of the damage caused by one too many keratin treatments. But the young mum has also been vocal about dealing with post partum hair loss after the birth of her daughter Eloise, which was likely also a contributing factor.
To combat hair breakage and loss Grainge incorporates a lot of repairing hair care products into her routine, so her hair can look it's healthiest and just do it's thing. But it also means that she doesn't do a whole lot to her hair when it comes to styling it — and her hairdresser, George Curran, likes to keep things simple with the scissors.
"I don’t like to break up the ends too much — I like to keep it quite blunt. I go through and soften and texturise the ends, but it’s blunt, and the ends are heavy," Curran told Vogue. "The most important thing when cutting hair is that it has to look good when it’s just left natural. No one wants a haircut they can’t style."
Although Grainge was initially throwing around the idea of an 'old money' lob, Curran made a point of slowly cutting her hair off in sections to discover the perfect length for her face.
"It’s very chic, it’s wearable, and it’s not too short so you can do different styles with it," he explained.
What products does Sofia use on her hair?
1/ K18 shampoo and conditioner
Grainge dished in a TikTok in 2024 that she starts her hair routine with K18's Damage Shield pH Protective Shampoo ($59 from Oz Hair & Beauty) and Conditioner ($59 from Oz Hair & Beauty) when she's in the shower, and she's been using their products for years to protect her hair.
"The conditioner protects you against UV rays, mechanical styling, plus silicone and wax — as they buildup overtime," she explained. "Damage is ongoing between styling, colouring, and environmental aggressors, so finding a routine that provides protection is key."

2/ Leave in hair masks
As we all discovered, when Grainge dropped her sleek bun tutorial in 2023, she likes to style her hair with a hair mask instead of hair gel to minimise damage and breakage.
"At the beginning of COVID, my hair length was stuck here from all the bleaching, all the dying," she explained via TikTok. "So I tried the [Christophe Robin] hair mask ($74.80 from RY) and I’m convinced it’s the only reason why my hair grew lusciously over COVID."
More recently she's been switching up her routine with the K18 Hair Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask ($87.45 from Amazon Australia), which she counts as one of her absolute favourites.
"If you're like me, you colour your hair [and] you've [got] damaged ends," she said via TikTok. "This product is the holy grail and honestly, it just makes your hair really silky."

3/ Repairing hair oils
"Hair oil is just so important, period," Grainge shared in a TikTok in 2024, while she combed Nexxus Ultra Lightweight Hair Oil ($15.98 from Amazon Australia) through her strands. And she means it too.
Once a week, Grainge will massage the Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp and Hair Strengthening Oil ($15.49 from Amazon Australia) into her scalp and strands before bed. And she also uses K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil ($75.60 from Shaver Shop) as a finishing product to smooth, soften and add shine back into her hair.
"This product seems to just really control my frizz without looking too greasy," she explain in a TikTok. "That's kind of my trick."

4/ Hair tools that cause minimal heat damage
Healthy hair is obviously really important to Grainge, so on the days when her hair doesn't want to play ball and she can't get away with wearing her natural hair texture like her hair dresser, George Curran, intended, she whips out her Dyson Airstrait™ ($597 from Dyson).
Rather than clamping the hair between two piping hot ceramic plates, the Airstrait uses airflow technology to smooth the hair and minimise potential damage caused by heat styling.

Sofia Richie Grainge's Biscoff bronde bob isn't the only look we're obsessing over currently — we've made our hair dresser study Hailey Bieber's hair colour before our next salon appointment.
