The top winter haircut and colour trends to try in 2025

According to experts

There's a lot to dread about winter: the cold, the rain, the short days. But there's also a lot to get excited about, like at-home movie marathons, and new winter perfumes and hair trends to try.

Now, that we're officially feeling the bracing winter chill, there's no better time to consult a few hair experts if, like us, you're in the market for a seasonal hair refresh, which is why we reached out to Anthony Nader (founder of Surry Hills' RAW Salon), Jaye Edwards (founder of Edwards&Co), and Aaron Nallo (founder of Mooi Salon).

The trio provided us with their trend forecasts for the next few months ahead in hair, as well as the hair cut and colour trends they think are finally on their way out.

Nader lists Sabrina Carpenter’s butterfly haircut and Millie Bobby Brown as a bottle blonde as his biggest 'outs' of the season. Edwards, on the other hand, is opting out of hard to care for colour with his clients.

"We're going to see a decline in the Scandi hairline trend due to the damage that it can cause if not done properly," he explains. "Another trend that's falling out of style is the high contrast money pieces, and high contrast colour in general. We're moving towards a more subtle, future proof look."

Nallo agrees, saying that chunky, high-contrast highlights  especially those blocky, face-framing streaks  are starting to fade out.

"We’re moving toward more blended, natural-looking colour techniques that feel expensive and lived-in," the hairstylist explains. "Also, overly straightened hair is making way for styles with more texture and body. It's less about perfection and more about embracing your hair’s natural personality."

As for the trends that made the it list? Keep scrolling to discover the trio's top winter hair colour and cut trends of 2025. Plus, the seasonally appropriate haircare they swear by for surviving the cooler months.

The top 3 winter hair colour trends in 2025

1/ Mocha Mousse

"[Mocha Mousseis perfect for those who love the quiet luxury trend, it's timeless, rich and luxurious," dishes Jaye Edwards. "We're seeing many clients transition to richer, and warm tones, which add warmth and dimension to the hair amidst the colder weather, where hair often feels dull and dry."

"This earthy hue embodies warmth, luxury and timeless sophistication (look no further than Hailey Rhode Bieber for your inspo BEAUTYcrew readers)," Anthony Nader tells us. "The beauty about this timeless hue is, unlike stark browns that can seem flat, this colour invites softness and depth, making it ideal for anyone looking to refresh their brunette hair."

"This winter rich, multi-dimensional brunettes are having a major moment," explains Revlon Professional's Aaron Nallo. "Think: warm mocha and glossy chestnut tones with subtle highlights that add depth and movement — it’s all about luxury and shine."

2/ Warm Marigold

"[Warm Marigold is a] radiant mix of gold, copper, and cosy brown shades," Nader explains. "Think of a natural redhead, with the dial turned up just a bit. The result? A gorgeous, healthy-looking hair colour that sparkles in the light [à la] Jessica Chastain."

"The copper trend is back!," exclaims Edwards. "This rich hair colour has been growing in popularity throughout autumn and into the winter. While [it's] a high maintenance colour, you can tailor it to be lighter or darker to suit your features."

A classic balayage, applied using modern techniques for example, can create a delicate, seamless blend that's easy to grow out over time, says Nallo.

"This winter, it’s less about contrast and more about soft, blended colour that mimics the natural lightening of hair over time, perfect for low-maintenance, high-impact colour," he explains.

3/ Vanilla Blonde

Finally washing away any remnants of summer and injecting some warmth into your hair strands, Vanilla Blonde is a lot softer, and a much lighter blonde, says Nader.

"[It's] light weight with just a hint of creaminess, he explains. "Your main inspiration here is Elle Fanning."

Pearlescent blondes feel chic and polished, Nallo concurs. "These tones work beautifully against winter’s darker wardrobes and muted makeup palettes," he explains.

The top 3 winter hair cut trends in 2025

1/ The Contoured Bob

"Bobs are always in, but this season it's about tailored, face-framing shapes that contour the jawline," Nallo tells us. "Sharp, yet feminine, it’s a versatile cut that works for both sleek and textured finishes."

Nader agrees citing Leslie Bibb's viral bob as the source for this fresh take on the timeless hair cut.

"It’s a no fuss hair shape and without a trace of a layer to be seen,' he explains. "It's blunt and doesn’t mince words."

"Thank you, Leslie Bibb, for introducing your famous White Lotus short bob to the world and giving women more confidence to wear an ultra short, but still very chic, haircut," says Nader.

"The micro bob is one of the best cuts to ask for if you're wanting a huge transformation," Edwards iterates. "It's a super sleek bob that you can style to create that chunky and flicky shape with lots of movement."

2/ The Modern Shag

The Modern Shag is a more refined take on the shag trend we've seen in recent years, says Nallo.

"Softer layers, longer fringe — it’s an edgy yet wearable cut that adds volume and movement — especially when paired with a natural wave or curl," he explains.

"I’m a big fan of this haircut because it’s easy-to-style for cooler weather because of how it holds up under hats and layers," says Nader. "It does not flatten out easily and looks even better when a little undone. If you want a bit of edge without spending too much time styling in the morning, this cut is practical and stylish.

"The Modern Shag is my top choice for anyone who prefers a low-maintenance winter haircut that delivers on shape and texture," he explains. "It is defined by soft face-framing pieces [and] offers natural volume without requiring round brushes or hot tools every day."

"I love soft layering as you can completely customise [your layers] to suit your facial features, hair length, and colour," Edwards went on to say.

3/ Curtain Bangs & Layers

"Curtain bangs continue to dominate, but they’re being paired with longer layers to create movement and shape without losing length," says Nallo. "It’s a great option for those looking to switch things up without committing to a full fringe."

If you’re not quite ready to lop your hair off, but feeling like you’re craving a noticeable change and without any tears, adding some longer layers throughout your long hair and skimming around your face is a timeless haircut that will always be youthful, says Nader.

"I personally love cutting in lengthy layers because its versatile for you to still have 'play' options when styling at home," he explains.

"Long layers are an all year round trend, but great for the colder seasons to get your hair polished up and refined," Edwards agrees.

The best haircare products for winter in 2025

"Winter can be harsh on the hair, so moisture and protection are key," says Nallo.

He swears by Revlon Professional's Restart Hydration Melting Conditioner ($26.95 from Oz Hair & Beauty) for instantly detangling and rebalancing moisture levels — "it’s ideal for tackling winter frizz and dryness".

"Revlon Professional's UniqOne Mask ($14.99 from Chemist Warehouse) is a winter must-have," he says. "It deeply nourishes, strengthens, and repairs, leaving the hair silky, shiny, and resilient — even in the coldest conditions."

Nader loves Oribe's Gold Lust Nourishing Oil ($93 from SSSHair) during winter, because it's luxuriously lightweight and absorbs instantly. Plus, it's safe to use on colour and keratin treated hair, and it provides UV thermal protection to help prevent damage too.

"[It] works wonders on dry, damaged and colour-treated hair to help add shine, while detangling and reducing frizz," he explains. "I absolutely love applying this to every hair type in the winter... even to finer hair strands, as there’s no trace of oiliness afterwards."

Nader also likes to use Davroe's Luxe Leave In Masque (usually $29.95, now on sale for $23.96 from SSSHair) to reduce flyaway static, and make the hair feel softer, healthier and controllable.

"I use this mostly on damp hair and let the hair dry naturally," he explains. "This works beautifully on curly and course hair textures, [making them] look and feel supple again."

"My favourite haircare products for winter are all about hydration," says Edwards.

"The O&M Power Base Masque ($44.95 from Adore Beauty) is my all time favourite for strengthening the hair and boosting fullness and growth," he explains. "I love the O&M Dry Queen Dry Shampoo ($42.95 from Oz Hair & Beauty) for extending time between washes, and a dry conditioner such as the O&M C-Spray ($42.95 from Oz Hair & Beauty) for hydrating and nourishing the ends of the hair. This combo is useful in winter when dry, indoor air and cold weather can exacerbate dryness and oily hair."
