Day to night: Beauty Editors reveal the best lip combinations
“What lip combo are you wearing?” is the question du jour as of late. According to data from the market research company Spate, across Google and TikTok, searches for 'lip combo' have increased by 97.5 per cent from April 2024 to March 2025, compared to the same period last year.
Whether we're awkwardly ogling the mouths of celebrities who've been blessed with a makeup artist who clearly has a penchant for perfectly painted pouts, or sliding into the comments section of BeautyTok to annoyingly ask “lip combo?” — finding the best combination of lip products has become the BEAUTYcrew Team's collective Roman empire.
Unfortunately, we don't have access to makeup artists with Chanel contracts like Lily Rose Depp and Margaret Qualley. But what the BEAUTYcrew Team does have is far too much time on our hands, and an occupational obligation to try as many of the beauty products that come across our desks as we possibly can.
So, if you're interested in taking advice from beauty industry lab rats like us, keep reading — from day to night — these are the BEAUTYcrew team's favourite lip combinatons.
Day:
Briar Clark, BEAUTYcrew’s Beauty Editor
"My daytime lip combination is essential when the weather cools down. I don’t wear a lot of eye makeup during the day, so blush and a solid lip combo are basically all that’s keeping me from looking like a pale, sickly child in the dead of winter. I started using Haus Labs By Lady Gaga PhD Hybrid Lip Glaze in ‘Macaron’ ($43 from Sephora) and Espressoh Aroma Lip Pencil in ‘Capriccio’ ($25.50 from Espressoh) after a seasonal colour analysis session with AEGI.Lab revealed that I’m a pure summer, which basically means I look the most alive when I’m wearing a lot of cool-toned pink makeup. I like to line my lips with the lip pencil first — it has an ultra-creamy formula that I can easily blend by pressing my lips together. Plus, the neutral pinky-nude shade imitates the plumping effect of the Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme Lip Shaper Plumping Lip Liner in ‘Puffy Nude’ ($42 from MECCA), which is a shade I love, I just can’t stand the burn of lip-plumping products as a sensitive skin girly. Once I’ve made my lips look like I’ve just enjoyed a big bowl of laksa for lunch, I like to layer a few coats of the lip glaze over the top. It has the prettiest sheer, cool-toned pink, glossy finish and it makes my lips look, again, plumper sans pain."

Day:
Delaney Loane, BEAUTYcrew’s Editor
"Nobody on the planet would refer to me as a minimalist, so I feel extremely proud to state that the first step in my morning lip combo is actually the same product I use as blush — I’m so low-key it almost hurts. Honestly, it’s more that I’m obsessed with the colour and finish, but please, allow me the win. After taking it across my cheeks, I use the doe foot applicator to add a dab of the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in ‘Happy’ ($45 from Sephora) to the centre of my lips, tapping it in with my finger to secure the hazy effect I’m after. Lately I’ve been topping it with a layer of the Milani Fruit Fetish Lip Oil in ‘Raspberry Peach’ ($24.99 from Priceline) — I swear to you it’s the best gloss I’ve used in a decade. It deepens the peachy pink colour of the blush just the right amount to flatter my skin and is as comfortable to wear as the most basic of balms. The lasting power of the combo is my favourite thing about it — by the time it needs a touch-up, it’s basically time to swap to my P.M. preferences."

"With the amount of lip products I have sitting in my cupboard waiting to be used, you’d think I apply several a day. Yet, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less high maintenance (which is a resounding shock, even to me), and if I remember to top up my lip balm throughout the day, then it’s considered a win. That being said, I do love a long-lasting lip stain in the morning that will last all day. I’ve been using the Muzigae Mansion Objet Water in shade ‘Celeb’ or ‘Diva’ ($27 from Myer) for a gorgeous wash of colour that is long-lasting and doesn’t need to be touched up. I love that it gives me a blurred, soft finish without being too intense. Then, I’ll use the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil in ‘Cherry’ ($49 from Clarins) for a little boost of hydration and a touch of berry colour. It’s an easy, effortless lip combo that I swear by for days when I don’t want to constantly reapply and touch up my lips."

"As a beauty writer, I’ve accumulated a lot of excellent lip products. So much so, I have a little bag within my handbag to keep all my favourites together — it’s all about choice people. But the combo I’m currently reaching for, which gives my lips a full, defined and seriously glossy pout, can’t be beat in my opinion. I start off with the creamy, super blendable, and hydrating Kosas Hotliner Hyaluronic Acid Contouring Lip Liner in ‘100’ ($38 from MECCA) to line my lips and create a blurred neutral ‘your lips but better’ base. Then I layer over Huda Beauty Faux Filler Gloss in ‘UUU-Baby’ ($38 from Sephora). The neutral, glossy combo is seriously to die for and I can’t imagine I’m going to switch up my routine any time soon."

Night:
Briar Clark, BEAUTYcrew’s Beauty Editor
"I rarely leave my house when the sun goes down, so if I do venture out, I like to put a bit of effort into my makeup. This means applying an involved eye look that requires more than just a few licks of mascara, plus, a bit of contour and blush, and a berry-inspired lip moment that feels fresh, rather than vampy. To achieve said lip combination I like to line my lips with a slightly deeper lip pencil than I’d typically wear during the day — like Kylie Cosmetics Precision Lip Liner in ‘Comes Naturally’ ($26 from MECCA) — which is a really wearable pinky-mauve nude shade. Then I layer a sheer, wet-look gloss over the top in a really punchy berry colour — like Fwee’s 3D Volumizing Glossy in ‘05 Move Currant 30%’ ($24 from W Cosmetics) — one to two coats looks like a lilac-leaning pink shade on me, and I can build the colour intensity by applying another layer or two if I feel like it."

Night:
Delaney Loane, BEAUTYcrew’s Editor
"My version of an everyday nude is basically pink, and so my version of an evening lip look is just a further venture down the raspberry-hued rabbit hole. I’m a die hard fan of the Westman Atelier Lip Suede Matte Lipstick in ‘LFG’ ($87 from MECCA), buffed into a layer of balm — to sheer it out. Fair warning: this lipstick takes pigment payoff to a whole new level, so I advise that you apply sparingly and build from there. I’m really not a lip liner person — I feel like I never escape with it looking like I got dodgy work done — so I tend to stick to a lip colour with a gloss over the top, whatever time of day. Once I’ve got the lipstick to look the right level of ‘blurred’ (no harsh lines here, thanks, hence the lip liner aversion), I like to team it with the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil in ‘Pitaya’ ($49 from Sephora). I end up looking like I’m on my way to an Elle Woods cosplay competition with the double dose of pink, but I wouldn’t have it any other way."

"As an honorary member of the ‘home and in bed by 9pm’ club, it’s not often that I’m making plans in the P.M. However, if I’m heading out for drinks or dinner, I like to amp up my lip combo a little. I’ll usually start with the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in ‘Pillow Talk’ ($38 from Charlotte Tilbury) which is the perfect shade to define my lips. I will then go in with a lipstick that is slightly darker than my natural lip. My go-to is MAC Macximal Sleek Satin Lipstick (formerly the cremesheen formula) in shade ‘Modesty’ ($40 from MAC), before topping off with a high-shine gloss from Pat McGrath in shade ‘Aphrodisiac’ ($52 from Sephora). While it may not be a super bold evening look, it is a polished, defined nude lip with a lot of shine, which is exactly how I like it."

Night:

"Much like the rest of my colleagues, heading out (and staying out) after work is a rarity. But you best believe I’m prepared for the occasion at all times. Makeup Forever’s Artist Color Pencil in ‘Anywhere Caffeine’ ($37 from Sephora) has a special place in my bag and my heart for such occasions. No, I wasn’t influenced by Hailey Bieber, but it pairs perfectly with my favourite (and recently reformulated) M.A.C Lustreglass Lipstick in ‘Hug Me’ ($44 from Myer). The brown shade compliments my skin tone, and love for neutrals perfectly. But, of course, I need to give an honourable mention to the overnight lip products that live in my bedside table. The Laneige Bouncy & Firm Lip Treatment ($39 from Adore Beauty) and the Byoma Liptide Lip Mask ($20 from Sephora) both keep my lips looking and feeling hydrated."
